Being a Work At Home Mom can be amazing. The freedom of not having a boss looking over your shoulder. Doing what you want, when you want. Being there full time for the kids. What they don’t tell you about being a Work At Home Mom is that it can be very isolating and flat-out lonely.
Following are 6 tips to help you combat the loneliness and isolation:
1. Get out of the house
Schedule some free time during the day for you to get out of the house for a little while. Take a walk by yourself or head to the park with your kids. Just getting out of the house for a few minutes can help keep the isolation at bay. You’re not trapped in your house and being a Work At Home Mom is supposed to be FUN!
2. Do something fun, just for you!
This could be as simple as taking a bath (uninterrupted), or even sitting down in front of the TV to watch Dr. Phil! You used to have hobbies before the kids arrived, why not continue the hobbies and do something you love to do on a regular basis.
3. Find Your Mom tribe
Find some local mom or networking groups. Meetup.com is a great resource for finding all sorts of groups around the world. You’re looking for fellow Mom’s that offer support and a judgment-free zone. If you’re feeling lonely and isolated, guaranteed there are other Moms in your area feeling that way too.
There’s an app for that! Check out the Mom Tribes app on the App Store! Mom Tribe is a location-based mobile app that gives moms like you an inclusive, judgment-free community in your own city. You don’t have to be invited, you won’t be filtered, and you can be any kind of mom at any stage of motherhood.
4. Skype With Friends & Family
If it’s face to face time that you’re missing, get personal by utilizing Skype with friends and family! I live 2 hours away from most of my family, and having Skype has been a true life-saver for my sanity. It’s also a great way to personally connect with online friends who live in other parts of the world!
5. Work At The Local Coffee Shop Or Library
If the kids are in school, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with heading to the local coffee shop with your laptop or tablet in hand to get in some people time. You never know when an opportunity for a conversation may pop-up.
If working around too much noise is more of a distraction, then head over to the local library. The library can be a great resource for community events as well.
6. Take A Group Fitness Class
You need to be healthy in order to take care of everyone in your family, so put yourself first and head to the gym a few times a week. Take a group class of some kind so you’re surrounded by others and strike up a conversation – you’ll already have something in common!
You have to take the first step and put yourself out there for others to get to know. You can’t expect someone to just knock on your door and say HI! It all starts with taking action. Find a Mom who seems to be your speed that you might be able to connect with and strike up a conversation.
Last, but definitely not least, never forget how amazing you are! You are the entire world to your children. You are their teacher, confident, chef, playmate, protector and your name is Mom. You are also a Business Owner and doing that among all the other challenges that each day brings. I am proud of you, and I’m honored to be in your circle!
