As an added bonus, I’m also going to tell you about my secret Twitter weapon! This bonus can be used for much more than I’ll be discussing here, but just this one tip alone is worth its weight in gold 😉
5000 Follow Limit
There are several limits that Twitter applies for the safety of it’s users. The first one that we’ll talk about is the 5000 Follow Limit. This simply means that you are allowed to follow 5000 Twitter accounts. Once you reach this limit, Twitter applies an algorithm which depends on your ratio of followers to follows (though Twitter will not say just what this ratio is).
If you hit this cap, you have two options available to you:
- Wait until more people follow you to increase your ratio
- Do some account housecleaning to remove Non-Followers
My Secret Weapon:
Unfortunately there is no easy way within Twitter itself to find out who isn’t following you back. This is where one of my favorite tools comes in: Crowdfire! I use Crowdfire every day for several purposes, but for now we’re just going to concentrate on the Non-Followers section.
As you can see in the following image, my Crowdfire profile is currently showing that I have 788 Non-Followers. These are all accounts that I’m following, but they have not followed me back. This is valuable Twitter real estate just sitting there!
These are the accounts that are now on the chopping block, and Crowdfire makes it very easy to unfollow with just a click on the red (-) sign. Once you’ve cleaned out some of these non-followers, you can go ahead and find some more accounts to follow and hopefully improve your ratio, allowing Twitter to increase your follow limit!
Another quick Twitter tip for you:
You can follow a maximum of 1000 accounts per day. My advice is to not follow or unfollow too quickly as you don’t want to end up with your account being locked.
I personally would never be able to find the time to follow 1000 accounts in a day, so I set a goal to increase my follows by 1000 in 5 days, and I nailed that by the end of day 4. Now that I’ve achieved that goal, I’ll be working towards 2500 follows, and increasing my followers. I’m currently at approximately 65% ratio, and I’d like to increase that exponentially. My first step will be to follow my own advice and unfollow those non-followers!!
That said, I’d better get back to work!!
